Welcome to

Sistasmiths

SistasSmiths group is comprised of African-American women metalsmiths who design and make jewelry and other metal arts using traditional metalsmithing techniques. We work with all types of metal including brass, copper, gold, sterling silver. We follow the rich tradition of other African-American female metalsmiths and jewelers such as Winifred Mason.

We welcome current metalsmiths and those who have an interest in the metal arts.

We share, support and educate through our work and designs. The mission of the group is to:

1) Share information and how-to’s on metalsmithing and jewelry making techniques so we can learn, grow and perfect our skills

2) Share tips and tricks that you have found.

3) Disseminate information on shows, galleries where we could show our work

4) Educate the public about African-American metalsmiths and jewelers

5) Break down barriers and misconceptions that the public may have about our work, skills and abilities.

valerie whittington

Each and every piece of art I create contains a fragment of me, every piece I create is in effort to unearth myself, therefore my art is a manifestation of my curiosities, my thoughts and images that some may find fall into a wide spectrum of simple, spiritual, colorful -to- odd, obscure, bold and teetering on the edge of weird. I am expressive yet restrained, complex yet simple, there is no pattern. I love Metal Art and in each piece is an imprint of my soul. I really can’t be pinned to one aesthetic because my mood determines my movement. I want my work to speak volumes to you, I don’t just want you to wear it, I want you to love it, experience it and share it. My creations are made using silver, copper, brass and bronze metals, accented with gemstones, wood and unconventional materials.
